STEP 2: Find COUNT real, currently operating businesses of BUSINESS TYPE in GEO. Include related names for the same type (e.g., senior living = retirement homes, assisted living, memory care). Leave out closed businesses, duplicates, places not open on weekdays, and offices with no walk-in location.

RULES:
- No header, numbering, bullets, blank lines, tables or extra text.
- Never put "|", ";" or a spaced dash inside a field.
- Ask for = role title (Executive Director, Office Manager, HR). Include a name only if the business's own site lists it.

1 Before you leave

8 printed resumes, flat in a folder — never folded.
Pen and a small notebook. You are collecting names.
Business casual. Collared shirt, no tie, no suit, no scrubs. A suit reads wrong for a coordinator role.
Phone on silent before you open the door.
Know the operator's name and say it right. Check the sign as you walk up.

2 When to go

Best: Tuesday–Thursday, 10:00–11:30 or 2:00–4:00.
Never: mealtimes — 8–9, 12–1, 5–6. The building is busy and nobody will talk.
Never: Monday morning or Friday after 3.
Plan 4–6 buildings per outing. Roughly 20 minutes each including drive.

3 Who to ask for

Retirement residence: Sales & Marketing Director, or General Manager.
Long-term care: Administrator. More formal — expect to be sent online.
Home care agency: Client Services Manager. Different pitch — coordination and intake, not tours.

If they are not in, get the name and the best time, leave a resume, and come back once. A second visit with their name is what separates you from mail.

4 Roles to ask about

Say one or two out loud. Never recite the list — it reads as "I'll take anything."

Residence — Admissions Coordinator · Retirement Living Advisor · Sales & Marketing Coordinator · Community Relations Coordinator · Move-In Coordinator · Concierge / Guest Services

Default pair: Admissions Coordinator and Community Relations. Swap in whatever their sign or website already calls it.

5 The opener

To reception

"Hi — is your sales director or general manager available for two minutes?"

If asked why: "I'm local, I'm interested in working here, and I'd rather introduce myself than just send a resume."

To the director — 30 seconds, then stop

"I'm Harsha, I live here in Mississauga. I trained as a physician overseas — I'm not licensed in Ontario, so I work on the healthcare side rather than clinically."

"I spent two years selling diagnostic services into physicians' offices across the GTA, and before that I did patient counselling and scheduling at a clinic. What I'm good at is the conversation with a family trying to understand a care assessment and a price at the same time."

"I'm interested in admissions or community relations here."

Then stop talking. The silence is doing the work. Let them respond before you say anything else.

6 The three questions you will get

"Why aren't you practising?"

"Licensing here means going back through residency, and that isn't realistic for me at this stage. I'd rather use the medical background where it's already useful — and it's useful here."

Say it flat and move on. Hesitating hurts more than the question.

"We don't have anything open."

"That's fine — I didn't expect there to be. Can I leave this with you, and who should I check back with when something does open?"

This is the most common answer. It is not a rejection. Get the name.

"Just apply online."

"I will, today. I wanted you to have a face to go with it — is there anything you'd want highlighted in the application?"

Then actually apply the same day, and say so in the follow-up.

7 The close — always the same

Hand over the resume.
Ask: "Who's the right person to follow up with?" Write the name down in front of them.
Ask: "Is email or a phone call better?"
"Thanks for the two minutes." Leave. Do not linger.

Success is a name and a follow-up channel — not a job. Six names beats one good chat.

8 Same day, before you forget

Log each visit: building, person, title, date, what they said.
Apply online anywhere that told you to.
Short email to anyone who gave a card — three sentences, reference the conversation.
Diarize a follow-up for 10–14 days. Two follow-ups maximum, then leave it.
